She is a Center for University Education Scholarship (CUES) Fellow at the University of Arizona and an Advanced Oncology Clinical Nurse Specialist (Oncology Nursing Certification Corporation).

Connie Miller, DNP, RNC-OB, CNE, received her Doctor of Nursing Practice from Arizona State University in 2016 and her M.S.N from University of Arizona in 1995. She is a Certified Nurse Educator (National League for Nursing, 2015), a Certified Inpatient Obstetrical Nurse (National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic and Neonatal Nursing Specialties, 1992) and a Registered Nurse.

Indiana University (IU) School of Nursing administrators Dr. Robin Newhouse and Dr. Rebecca Bartlett Ellis outline IU’s faculty-led curriculum transformation process using the Essentials framework. The process focuses on curriculum mapping for alignment of the Essentials to courses, course competencies, and program outcomes, as well as assessment strategies to evaluate student learning outcomes consistent with course competencies. Faculty are engaged through faculty governance committees, embracing opportunities to develop curricula that supports student success and teaching/learning excellence.

Dr. Robin Newhouse is the dean of the Indiana University (IU) School of Nursing and an IU distinguished professor. Her research focuses on health system interventions to improve care processes and patient outcomes. She has published extensively on health services improvement interventions, acute care quality issues and evidence-based practice.

Rebecca Bartlett Ellis is an Associate Professor and the Executive Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Indiana University School of Nursing, Indianapolis. She has more than 14 years of teaching experience in undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral level programs, she synergistically aligns her academic practice with patient care and research. Both nationally and internationally recognized expert in the field of medication management and adherence, her research focuses on developing and testing person-centered interventions to support medication management utilizing digital health technologies. She led a multidisciplinary team to develop a patented, smart pillbox, to digitally track patients’ pillbox interactions while managing medications. She is the first nurse in the 107-year history of her school of nursing to receive a patent. She co-led the development of a digital health checklist and framework to aid researchers’ decision-making about digital health technologies to ensure that they are used ethically, safely, securely, and effectively.

Using a clinical educator track, she demonstrates how alignment with these competencies can be achieved. Dr. Barber also shares a process for outlining competencies to student learning from the perspective of a small liberal arts nursing program.

Dr. Jackie Barber is the Dean of the Nylen School of Nursing and full professor at Morningside University. She received her bachelor of science in nursing degree from Morningside College; her master of science in nursing degree from Creighton University; and her Doctorate in education/health professions from College of Saint Mary. She demonstrates expertise in medical-surgical, oncology, infusion therapy, and community health. She continues to delivery patient care in the practice of home infusion and rural settings. She has more than 24 years of teaching. She is a certified Quality Matters evaluator. She led the initiative for designing and implementing the graduate and doctorate nursing programs at Morningside University. In 2021, she was awarded the Siouxland Nurse of the Year. In 2019, she was the recipient of the Thompson Employee of the Year award. She was the recipient of the Lucille and Charles Wert Faculty Excellence Award in 2014, the Sharon Walker Faculty Excellence Award in 2006 and 2012, and ODK Faculty Person of the Year Award in 2005 and 2013. She was a past recipient of the AACN LANP Fellowship and the Wharton Executive Leadership Program. She served on the AACN Re-envision of the Essentials National Taskforce and the Iowa Board of Nursing ARNP Taskforce. She is a member of the Commission on Nurses Certification Board of Commissioners (CNC), AACN Nomination Committee member, board member of the Iowa League of Nursing, and past president of the Iowa Association of Colleges of Nurses.

Dr. Gerry Altmiller, professor of nursing and director of The College of New Jersey Quality and Safety Innovation Center, discusses how to encourage faculty colleagues to utilize competency-based education strategies aligned with the 2021 Essentials. Topics include approaches for conducting effective and useful curriculum mapping and strategies for streamlining the process for colleagues. Dr. Altmiller will share examples for integrating sub-competencies appropriate to pre-licensure, RN-BSN, and graduate education into curricula, along with ideas to operationalize this new alignment on a small and large scale.

Gerry Altmiller, EdD, APRN, ACNS-BC, ANEF, FAAN, is a professor of nursing at The College of New Jersey, a clinical nurse specialist consultant for Einstein Healthcare Network in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and has pioneered the integration of quality and safety competencies in nursing education since 2006 when she served as a faculty leader for one of the 15 pilot schools for the Quality and Safety Education for Nurses (QSEN) Collaboration. She currently is a national consultant for QSEN and director of the Quality and Safety Innovation Center at The College of New Jersey. She leads the QSEN Academic Task Force, creating opportunities for its 110 members to network, share ideas, and conduct academic focused research. Dr. Altmiller authored the Teamwork and Communication Module of the National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s Transition to Practice program and in 2014 she received a Lindback Award for distinguished teaching. Her work on constructive feedback led to the development, testing, and dissemination of support tools for nurse educators and learning tools for students to view feedback as an opportunity. Dr. Altmiller was co-editor of a special QSEN issue of Nurse Educator and currently serves on the journal’s editorial board. Her research focuses on clinical evaluation, QSEN integration, and communication challenges in educational and practice environments.

Dr. Ann H. White, Dean of the College of Nursing and Health Professions at the University of Southern Indiana, shares a nursing program’s use of competencies to drive undergraduate curriculum development. Using students learning outcomes, a framework of competencies statements was created to drive leveling of content, clinical evaluation expectations, and assessment methods. To ensure the seamless integration of these competencies, faculty champions have been identified at each level, leading discussions to review and revise the competencies annually.

Ann H. White, RN, PhD, NE-BC, earned her PhD in nursing education from Georgia State University in 1998, an MBA from West Virginia Wesleyan College in 1989, a master’s degree in nursing from the University of Cincinnati in 1981, a bachelor’s degree in nursing from the University of Iowa in 1979, and a nursing diploma from Allen Memorial School of Nursing in 1972. She is a registered nurse in both Indiana and Kentucky and holds national board certification as a nurse executive from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC).
